Egypt: Violence Against Women Soars Despite New Laws

Amnesty International reports that women and girls face continued and widespread sexual harassment, sexual assault, and violence in all areas of public and private life in Egypt. Amnesty also found that the Egyptian government has done little to hold perpetrators accountable or protect women, despite recent legal reforms. Amnesty urged Egypt to take concrete measures to protect women from violence in the home, at work, in public and in custody, particularly as the country recently committed to developing a national strategy on violence against women. In 2013, a Thompson Reuters poll ranked Egypt “as the worst country in the Arab world for women's rights.”
