Latin America and the Caribbean: XVI Regional Conference On Women To Start on August 12
Monday, August 11, 2025 9:45 AM

From August 12–15, 2025, Mexico City will host the XVI Regional Conference on Women, the United Nations’ main gender forum in Latin America and the Caribbean, marking 30 years since the Beijing Platform for Action.

The event comes amid urgent gender equality challenges and growing hostility toward women’s rights. Key issues include the unequal burden of unpaid care work, persistent gender-based violence, high femicide rates, attacks on trans women, rising adolescent pregnancies—often from sexual violence—and restrictions on reproductive rights in many countries, like Peru, Brazil and Argentina.

Amnesty International and feminist networks urge governments to commit to concrete measures, sustainable care policies, and the eradication of violence and discrimination, particularly against marginalized women and LGBTIQ+ people. The conference will also address the shrinking civic space that endangers women human rights defenders and demand state accountability to advance equality in the region. The conference can be followed virtually through this link.
