Mozambique: Renewed Conflict Forces 22,000 to Flee, Heightening Risks for Women and Girls

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reports that renewed violence in northern Mozambique has displaced more than 22,000 people in just one week, exposing women and girls to heightened risks of sexual violence and exploitation. Many of those fleeing the Cabo Delgado region face abuse during displacement and in overcrowded shelters, where security and access to aid are limited. Humanitarian agencies are warning of worsening conditions for displaced families, with women and girls facing threats while collecting water, food, and firewood in conflict-affected areas. The UN has called for urgent international support to strengthen protection measures and humanitarian access.
