Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless fight for democracy and human rights in Venezuela. The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised her efforts to promote a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy and highlighted her leadership during the disputed 2024 presidential election. Machado dedicated the award to “the people of Venezuela”, calling it a recognition of their collective struggle for freedom. This is the second Nobel Peace Prize ever awarded to a Venezuelan, following Baruj Benacerraf’s 1980 Nobel in Medicine.
