Initial & Country of origin: EK from Ethiopia
Case Type: Affirmative Asylum
Date of Entry, Manner of Entry: 08/12/2023, F-1
Language/Interpretation needs: Amharic & English
EK is a Tigrayan man who fears persecution by the Ethiopian government due to his ethnicity and his father’s employment by the Ethiopian government and the United Nations employment. After civil war erupted in Ethiopia in 2020, officials searched the family home for EK’s father, seized his uniform and weapon, briefly detained EK’s mother, and repeatedly threatened her; Tigrayan coworkers who returned to Ethiopia from Sudan were imprisoned. EK’s father Edom's father writes to the UN requesting an extension of his term in Sudan for fear of returning to Ethiopia, ultimately seeking asylum in Uganda.
EK’s mother remains in Ethiopia, continues to receive threats and reprisals, has had property seized, and was recently fined for her husband’s alleged “desertion,” while also facing harassment from neighbors due to her Tigrayan heritage.
Note: EK filed I-589 application on 12/11/25, had an interview with asylum office scheduled for 03/06/2026 but got cancelled.
