Case #26-0095503
Initials & Country of Origin: M.M from Mauritania
Type of Case: Removal Asylum
Language/interpretation needs: Wolof & French (needs interpreter)
Date of Entry (and status, if any): 05/03/2023, EWI; Asylum seeker (asylum application timely filed on 02/07/2024)
Other deadlines: Continued MCH 01/12/2027 with IJ Ivany
Case Summary: M.M is a Black Mauritanian musical artist who uses his music to denounce slavery and systemic oppression against Black Mauritanians and has been repeatedly targeted by authorities as a result.
On August 16, 2022, M.M was arrested at a live concert organized to protest racism and oppression. He was detained for 24 days in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, beaten by police, and interrogated about his activism, with officers accusing him of spreading “lies” about slavery. He was released only after becoming severely ill. In 2023, he first was arrested during a protest, resulting in his detention for 13 days, interrogation, and released after his father paid a substantial bribe. A month after, he was arrested a third time following a land dispute between his family and a group of Arab men. During the incident, his mother was assaulted, and MM and his brother were beaten in custody.
Theory of the Case: Fear of future persecution by government actors on account of his political opinion and race.
Commitment: Represent client through the remainder of removal proceedings--preparing and filing additional evidence, pre-hearing brief, and preparing the client for a final merits hearing. Asylum Application has already been filed.
Court: Yes
Experience level/case team size recommended: Appropriate for any experience level and team size
