The Taliban government is experiencing deep internal divisions over restrictions on women’s rights, particularly because of Supreme Leader Haibatullah Akhundzada’s limiting of women’s economic freedom and the suppression of girls’ education. Key ministers, including Sirajuddin Haqqani, Mullah Yaqoob, and Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, who are the interior, defense, and deputy foreign ministers, respectively, have been pushing for a more moderate approach that opposes Akhundzada’s new protocols. As a result, Stanikzai fled to Dubai after an arrest warrant was issued, while Haqqani has remained outside of Afghanistan. In response, Akhundzada has tightened control, escalating concerns over the Taliban’s unity and the risk of infighting and governance instability.
