Africa: Activists to Sue Tanzania for Alleged Sexual Torture and Illegal Detention

Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and Ugandan journalist Agather Atuhaire are suing the Tanzanian government after alleging they were abducted, tortured, and sexually assaulted by security agents in Dar es Salaam in May 2025. The pair were in Tanzania to support opposition figure Tundu Lissu when they were forcibly taken from their hotel, blindfolded, beaten, and subjected to degrading abuse—including sexual violence and being smeared with excrement. They were later dumped at the Kenyan and Ugandan borders. The activists plan to seek justice in Tanzanian courts as well as regional and international human rights bodies. Their case sheds light on growing authoritarianism and the crackdown on dissent under President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The Tanzanian government has promised an investigation but has cast doubt on the activists' claims.
