During the 2026 Rio Carnival, major samba schools honoured Black Brazilian women writers, framing the tribute as “historical reparation.” The parades drew attention to the disproportionate poverty, illiteracy, and gender-based violence experienced by Black women in Brazil. The event shows how cultural spaces are increasingly used to raise awareness of intersecting racial and gender inequalities, keeping violence against women visible in public discourse.
