Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced the arrest of Maria Margarita Rojas, a Houston-area midwife, on charges of illegally performing abortions and practicing medicine without a license. Rojas, who falsely presented herself as a doctor, allegedly operated unlicensed clinics and provided illegal abortion procedures, which carry a penalty of up to 20 years in prison. Texas law bans most abortions except in limited cases to save a pregnant patient’s life. Paxton emphasized his commitment to enforcing the state’s strict abortion laws and prosecuting unlicensed individuals endangering women’s health.
