Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) entered into force in May of 2008. The Convention guarantees equal rights to persons with disabilities, including women with disabilities (Article 6). Article 6 recognizes that women with disabilities experience “multiple discrimination” and obligates States Parties to ensure women with disabilities enjoy “full and equal enjoyment” of their human rights. The Committee on the Rights of Person with Disabilities, tasked with interpreting the convention, considers individual communications state-to-state complaints, and inquiries. States Parties also are required to submit periodic reports on their progress toward implementing the convention. 182 countries have ratified the CRPD and 8 have signed it.
