In a joint submission to the United Nations Human Rights Council named The Crisis of Women’s and Girls’ Rights in Egypt, eight NGOs reported that women’s rights have worsened throughout Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s rule, despite his pledges to invest in gender equality. The report elucidated that domestic violence and partner violence had increased, marital rape remained unrecognized, criminalization of women’s free speech rose, and abortion continued to be banned in the last decade. Furthermore, the Egyptian government decreased the overall funding for women’s education, further exacerbating the gender gaps within literacy, employment, political participation, and leadership—reflecting systemic inequality
