The Indonesian government’s “first national survey on violence against women” has found that at least one third of Indonesian women have survived physical or sexual violence. The UN Population Fund (UNFPA), which supported the survey, has said that the new data reveals an “urgent” need for the government and local communities to act to protect women from violence. According to the Thomson Reuters Foundation, women's groups in Indonesia welcomed the government’s report, having “long said a lack of comprehensive data hampered education and prevention of violence, making it harder to reflect the prevalence of the crime.”
