Kenya: Human Rights Group Says Post-Election Rape Survivors Deserve Compensation and Care

The non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called on the Kenyan government to provide justice and reparations to women who survived the widespread sexual violence that followed Kenya’s contested 2007 election. HRW said that, to date, the Kenyan government has done little or nothing to help survivors recover from the debilitating physical, mental and economic injuries suffered during and after the 2007-2008 violence. HRW issued its recommendations after compiling more than 160 interviews with survivors of sexual violence, as well as interviews with Kenyan government workers, medical personnel and civil society actors.
