Syria: Female activists’ role in advancing gender-inclusive practices in Rojava

In northeastern Syria, the autonomous region of Rojava has become a pioneering force for gender equality through a system of co-governance, grassroots democracy, and legal reforms empowering women. Even though they are facing ongoing threats from military aggression, extremist groups, and political isolation, networks such as Kongra Star and women’s houses (mala jin) are providing crucial support for women in Rojava while policies banning child marriage and promoting female leadership are challenging patriarchal norms. Thus, Rojava is setting a model of feminist governance, demonstrating how gender equality can be institutionalized even in the midst of conflict.
