At a recent summit, Executive Director of UN Women Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said that dealing with and solving the crisis of violence against women is a primary issue of concern for UN Women. Mlambo-Ngcuka used the summit, which was focused on protecting women and girls in emergencies, to address widespread prevalence of violence against women.

Natural disasters and national crises adversely affect women and girls, who are left extremely vulnerable.  Women also have a more difficult time re-establishing themselves financially after disasters.  Mlambo-Ngcuka said that UN Women will continue to work with national governments to ensure that emergencies do not have a disproportionate impact on women.
