More than fifity percent of women in Alaska's Nome census area have experienced physical or sexual violence, or both, according to a 2014 survey conducted by the University of Alaska Anchorage Justice Center and the Alaska Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. Of the women surveyed, 40.3% confirmed they had been a victim of intimate partner violence, and 31% responded that they had been sexually assaulted during their lifetime. The Nome survey results echo the high rates of violence against women found by similar surveys of women accross Alaska.
