Gender Violence Persists in Post-War Liberia

Rape and violence against women persists in post-war Liberia.  Measures are being taken to control the violence, but the country is still recovering from 14 years of civil war. A new rape law was introduced the day before President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf's inauguration.

The UN's "zero tolerance" policy is one key to ending the problem. In addition, the UN Mission's efforts to bring stability to the country and their support of the local police and court system are considered important steps in ending the gender-based violence.
