Georgia Lowers the Age of Responsibility From 14 to 12

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has signed an amendment that will lower the age of responsibility from 14 to 12. Now it will be possible to hold a child legally responsible for specific crimes such as premeditated murder, intentional bodily injury, and most types of assault and robbery. Human Rights Watch published a statement criticizing the amendments and stated that Georgia is going against both international and European standards. Human Rights Watch also stated that they believe that rather than fixing the problem of juvenile delinquency, lowering the age of responsibility will most likely make it worse.
