Madagascar Raises Legal Age of Marriage to Eighteen

The Government of Madagascar’s Parliament recently approved two new laws, including one raising the legal age of marriage to eighteen for both genders. This is an important step for Madagascar, since between 1987 and 2005, 39 percent of children were married before the age of eighteen. UNICEF applauds the government for taking steps to align Madagascar’s child protection legislation with international standards and hopes that the legislation will be put into practice and that communities will be educated on the importance of these new laws in curtailing violence against young girls.
