NGOs in the Former Yugoslav Republics Focus on Educating Youth to Change Post-War Culture of Violence

Surveys conducted in the last five years by local NGOs in the former Yugoslav republics show that one-third to two-thirds of women in Croatia and

Bosnia

have experienced partner abuse. A World Health Organization study has shown similar results for intimate partner violence in

Serbia

Such statistics have led several local NGOs in the former Yugoslav republics to pursue unique and creative programs aimed at changing a post-war culture of violence through educating young people about gender-based violence. Response to the program has been positive. While most participants are female, organizations are working on campaigns to target young men, as well.
