New IOM Publication: MRS N°29 - Trafficking in Human Beings and the 2006 World Cup in Germany

The Internation Organization for Migration (IOM) has released a report, MRS N°29 - Trafficking in Human Beings and the 2006 World Cup in Germany, exploring the issue of trafficking of women at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Prior to the World Cup there was considerable speculation that rates of trafficking and sexual exploitation would significantly increase. This report investigates whether or not there is any evidence to suggest that an increase in the number of women trafficked to Germany occurred. The report also examines the measures taken by the German authorities and NGOs to counter trafficking during the World Cup. Recommendations based on the World Cup experience are provided for future major events. The recommendations are targeted at future event organizers, policymakers and relevant authorities and NGOs.
