The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) convened a three day conference in Dushanbe, Tajikistan 20-22 October, 2008 to address ways in which states should address violence against women. Approximately 100 experts from 21 countries attended with the goal of discussing best practices in implementing legislation and programs in many of the OSCE member states. Tajikistan's Deputy Prime Minister, Rukiya Kurbonova, reported that "The Government of Tajikistan with the support of the OSCE and other international agencies is undertaking steps to ensure gender equality and to fight human trafficking and violence against women."
