Roma Women Win in Court

A Slovakia court recently ruled that it was a violation of the human rights of three Gypsy women to be sterilized without their consent. Two of the women were underage. The women report that the violations occurred between 1999 and 2002 in hospitals. In Kosice, a southeastern town, repeated attempts to inform the prosecutor about the violation of their rights were ignored. In December, the Constitutional court ruled in favor of the women's human rights claims, and awarded them $1,865 in damages. The ruling comes on the tails of a European Roma Rights Center in Budapest publication charging Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia with trying to solve the "problem" of the Gypsy minority in their countries through forced, illegal sterilization.
