Study Published on Experience of Intimate Partner Violence Among Older Women

A recent study, Intimate Partner Violence in Older Women, found that one in four women over the age of 65 had been a victim of physical, sexual, or psychological violence. Although approximately 3.5 percent of the women interviewed had experienced violence in the past five years, only three percent of women had been asked by a health care provider about intimate partner violence since age 18. The authors of the study also believe that the study underestimates the extent of the violence as older women may minimize the extent of the violence they experienced or may not recall it at all.
