The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour, praised the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women for its work on monitoring countries’ compliance with the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). CEDAW, ratified by nearly the entire international community, has been described as an International Bill of Rights for Women, and according to Arbour, was the first step in establishing a comprehensive framework of women’s human rights. Arbour’s statements coincide with the committee’s twenty-fifth anniversary of its work, throughout which the committee has reviewed multiple reports from over 154 countries.
