UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Visits Kyrgyzstan

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour finished a 2-day visit to Kyrgyzstan, where she urged further progress be made regarding the treatment of women and detainees in Kyrgyzstan.  She spoke with local officials regarding the judiciary, gender equality and women's participation in the public sector. Arbour also requested that action be taken to ratify the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. Kyrgyzstan's President Bakiev agreed to establish a presence of the UN High Commission for Human Rights in the country's capital.
