BBC News published an article reporting that Rwanda will be the first country to have more women than men in parliament if the preliminary results are an indicator of the final results. According to the article, women make up about 55 percent of the parliament and occupy 44 of the 80 seats elected thus far. Rwandans interviewed for this article noted the higher status women now occupy in the country. Although in the past women were relegated to the domestic sphere, the composition of parliament is at least partial evidence of a shift toward gender equality. To read full article, click here.
