Africa: Persistent Gender Gap in Water Sector Leadership
Monday, September 29, 2025 3:50 PM

A United Nations University (UNU-INWEH) analysis finds that women hold only 17% of top leadership posts in Africa's national water ministries. Drawing on 2023–2024 data from 54 countries, the report shows limited female presence in senior technical and policy roles. This gender imbalance hampers inclusive decision-making in a sector that directly affects women and girls through water access, sanitation, and hygiene. Researchers link the gap to inadequate recruitment, training opportunities, and social norms that limit women’s career advancement. They urge African governments to adopt gender quotas, mentorship programs, and scholarship incentives to close the leadership gap.
