The 6th UNI Africa Women’s Conference, held from 23–24 June 2025 in Maputo, Mozambique, brought together over 80 female trade union leaders from 34 unions across 15 African countries under the theme “Consolidating Women’s Power.” The conference focused on advancing gender equality, improving women’s health at work, and strengthening female leadership within the trade union movement.

Delegates celebrated the success of the “40 for 40” campaign and the UNI Mentoring Program, which have significantly increased women’s confidence and representation in union leadership. Health rights in the workplace, particularly issues relating to menstruation, maternity, menopause, and mental health were recognized as critical to achieving gender equality. The conference also emphasized using collective bargaining to include gender-responsive provisions like maternity and paternity leave, safe workplaces, and breastfeeding support. The conference concluded with resolutions to enforce gender mainstreaming, promote the ratification and implementation of ILO Convention 190 and Recommendation 206, support women’s health, and expand mentorship for emerging women leaders.
