Algeria has proposed major changes to its social insurance law by extending paid maternity leave from 98 to 150 days, with full wage compensation. The legislation, introduced by the Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security, also offers additional leave of up to one year for mothers of newborns with disabilities or serious illnesses. With these reforms, the Algerian government officials emphasize their desire to go beyond international standards and aim to reduce pressure on working mothers, protect infant health, and ensure women’s leave time does not hurt their career advancement or retirement benefits.
