Argentina is facing a sharp rise in gender-based violence, with domestic violence reports increasing and feminist groups documenting 29 femicides in October alone, including transfemicides. The national ombudsman’s office estimates a femicide occurs every 35 hours.
Between 2023 and 2024, funding for programs preventing and responding to gender-based violence fell by 89 per cent, with survivor assistance programs like Acompañar losing 90 per cent of their budget. Proposed 2026 cuts would also slash resources for violence prevention, reproductive health, and sexuality education. Incoming legislators taking office on December 10 have an opportunity to reverse course by blocking harmful measures, strengthening legal protections, and ensuring access to essential health and support services.
