Austria: The Wage Gap Between Women and Men Persists
Monday, February 16, 2026 1:00 PM

According to 2024 statistics, women in Austria earn on average 11.5% less than men despite outnumbering men in the workforce and having higher levels of education. Although trends indicate the wage gap is gradually decreasing, equalization will not be reached at the current rate until 2043.

The wage gap is influenced by many structural inequalities, such as women trading career opportunities to raise a family, asking for raises or bonuses less often than male colleagues and choosing jobs in sectors with lower wages. Austria has one of the largest wage gaps among European Union (EU) member states, but the EU Pay Transparency Directive, which will be implemented by June 2026, aims to address and help reduce the gap through obligatory salary transparency.
