Levels of gender-based violence in Brazil have soared to record high levels in Brazil. According to the think tank Fórum Brasileiro de Segurança Pública, 37.5% of women aged 16 and over have experienced a form of gender-based violence whether it be physical, sexual, and/or psychological violence. Women’s distrust in the state’s ability to provide justice and care services have led to large protests over the years. In 2015, women took to the streets to successfully protested the downvoting of a bill that would criminalize abortion in all circumstances. The defunding of anti-gender-based violence policies has contributed to the alarming trend.
