United Nations (UN) human rights experts have expressed grave concern over a significant increase in serious human rights violations in Burundi during 2024 and 2025. Between January 2024 and May 2025, Burundian civil society organizations documented at least 200 cases of sexual violence, including child rape, primarily attributed to state agents and other affiliated groups. The experts also reported a sharp rise in arbitrary detentions, extrajudicial killings, and attacks on human rights defenders, particularly in the context of political repression. They urged the Burundian government to uphold its international human rights obligations and allow independent investigations into these abuses.
