In July 2025, the Central African Republic became the 46th African Union member state to ratify the Maputo Protocol. The Protocol, a landmark treaty aimed at promoting and protecting women's rights across the continent, addresses issues such as gender-based violence, child marriage, female genital mutilation, and women's participation in political and public life. Despite the country's ongoing challenges, the ratification signals a commitment to legal reforms and the protection of women's rights. Human rights organizations have welcomed the move but emphasize the need for effective implementation to ensure commitments are upheld.
