Chile: Government debates 14-Week abortion legalization amid deep public divide

The Chilean Government has introduced a bill that would legalize abortions up to 14 weeks of pregnancy. Currently, abortions are only permitted on the grounds of a threat to the life of the mother, serious malformation of the fetus, or rape — a continually evolving stance since Augusto Pinochet repealed the law allowing abortions on health grounds in 1989. The passage of the abortion bill is uncertain: while feminist groups strongly favor decriminalizing abortion, conversative groups within the county stand against the bill. As it stands, 34% of Chileans believe in the right to abortion regardless of circumstance while half of Chileans think it should only be allowed in special circumstances.
