Chile’s mining sector has undergone a major transformation over the past decade, with women now representing 23.1% of the workforce, the highest figure worldwide, up from just 7.7% in 2014. Progress is also reflected in leadership, as more women take on management roles across the industry.

The change stems from joint efforts by industry, academia, and civil society, promoting inclusion through STEM programs, mentorship networks, and workplace reforms. Companies like BHP, now at 46% female representation, have implemented flexible work policies, inclusive facilities, and training initiatives to attract and retain women.

Women’s groups, including Women in Mining Chile, have also played a key role, highlighting how diversity boosts productivity, safety, and innovation. Experts stress that the next challenge is inspiring new generations of women to view mining as a space for technological transformation and leadership.
