Chile’s Chamber of Deputies has approved a bill amending the General Law on Urbanism and Construction to require urban planning that prioritizes safety and accessibility for women, children, older adults, and people with disabilities. The measure, part of the government’s fast-track legislative agenda, passed with overwhelming support—112 votes in favor, one against, and 11 abstentions. Backed by a cross-party group of female legislators, the initiative seeks to incorporate situational prevention tools into city planning, ensuring public spaces are designed to enhance visibility and reduce risks of violence.
Officials highlighted the law as a milestone in integrating gender and inclusion into urban development. Lawmakers described the reform as a state-level effort to build safer, more inclusive cities where citizens, especially women and girls, can move freely without fear.
