Former Energy Minister and current Banco Popular president María Fernanda Suárez has launched Mujeres por la Democracia (in English, women for democracy), a new civic organization in Colombia made up of 300 women committed to defending and promoting democracy.

The initiative, now established as a foundation, seeks to raise public awareness and encourage broader citizen participation, with Suárez stressing that democracy must be actively protected despite the country’s strong institutions. Symbolic actions, such as placing scarves with the group’s name on landmarks in Bogotá and Cali, aim to spark conversation, while the movement calls on women nationwide to join and “put democracy in fashion.
