On June 3, 2025, the Colombian government proposed the Comprehensive Trans Law to uphold the rights of gender-diverse populations. The law, which seeks to eliminate “all forms of injustice, exclusion, discrimination and violence in both the private and public spheres,” comes on the heels of the high-profile murder of a transgender woman in Bello, Colombia. The bill offers definitions of gender expression, gender fluidity, and gender identity, and establishes the right to gender identity. It also takes steps to make the administration and its processes more sensitive to gender diversity: the bill mandates that public servants integrate a gender-diverse approach in their work and offers a non-binary option on identification. As violence against LGBTQI+ persons in Colombia persists, the bill offers a hopeful path forward.
