Amnesty International, in a new report, accused the Cuban government of carrying out gender-based repression against women activists, journalists and human rights defenders. The report cites arbitrary detentions, surveillance, threats against families and sexualized harassment, worsened for Black women, single mothers and LGBTQ+ women.
Amnesty says this repression is enabled by judicial dependence on the government, lack of complaint mechanisms, and the absence of a comprehensive gender-based violence law. The group urges stronger international pressure and launches a global petition calling on president Miguel Díaz-Canel to end the harassment and adopt a national law to protect women defenders.
