More than 100 delegates from 27 countries gathered in Havana to mark the 80th anniversary of the Women’s International Democratic Federation (WIDF), a key global organization founded in Paris in 1945 to advance women’s political, social and economic rights. Born from the antifascist women’s movements of the post–World War II era, the Federation has spent eight decades advocating for peace, nuclear disarmament, and gender equality, while supporting national liberation struggles and basic rights such as women’s suffrage, equal access to education and employment, and paid maternity leave.

The celebration also highlighted Cuba’s historic role within the WIDF, particularly through Vilma Espín, longtime leader of the Federation of Cuban Women. Espín helped elevate international recognition of Cuban women’s achievements after the Revolution and strengthened ties among progressive women’s movements across the Global South. Delegates emphasized that the WIDF’s legacy remains relevant today as global struggles over women’s rights, peace, and social justice continue to evolve.
