In Guatemala, an average of five women go missing each day, according to official records from the Isabel-Claudina alert system, which responds to cases involving women over 18. Between June 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025, the Public Ministry issued 1,770 alerts, with 150 alerts remaining active. Since its launch in 2018, the system has generated 13,070 alerts, resolving 12,487 cases, though 583 women are still missing. Authorities stress the importance of the first hours after disappearance, noting causes range from domestic violence to criminal activity, including gang involvement. The alert system was created after the killings of María Isabel Veliz (2001) and Claudina Isabel Velásquez (2005) to strengthen gender-sensitive investigations and protect women’s rights and lives.
