Jordan Elections: Women Break Barriers with 20% of Seats
Tuesday, September 23, 2025 2:30 PM
In September 2024, Jordan’s parliamentary elections marked a breakthrough for women, who won 19.5% of seats. This milestone came after major legal reforms, including higher quotas for women in parliament, political parties, and local councils. Backed by UN Women, the European Union, and Italian Development Cooperation, these changes were reinforced through awareness campaigns, scholarships, and leadership programs that trained over 340 aspiring female candidates. Activists such as Yusra Al-Kharisha and Jameeleh Kassab stressed that while laws open doors, true empowerment also requires role models, skills training, and public support to overcome deep-rooted cultural barriers. Together, these efforts are helping Jordan build momentum toward a more inclusive and representative political future.
