According to a recent study by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL), the Latin American region has experienced one of the most dramatic drops in birth rates since the 1950s. The global online community of Nunca Madres (Never Mothers), has stated that the main reasons their members refrain from motherhood are (1) economic concerns, and (2) climate change. However, the decision to not have children has been heavily criticized by conservative and Christian groups; many women report that they feel alienated when making the choice of remaining childless. Nunca Madres maintains that the states should do more in providing social and healthcare security for women so that they can provide for their families and recognize that it is ultimately a choice of individual autonomy.
