The Parliament of Montenegro adopted the Law on Protection from Domestic Violence in the session held on 27 July 2010. The Law was drafted in October 2009. Public hearings were held in November of 2009, and a number of parties made comments to the draft law. After the Government of Montenegro adopted the Proposal of the Law in April of 2010, NGOs, including SOS Hotline Niksic, Human Rights Action, Women’s Safe House, Centre for Citizen Education, SOS Podgorica, ANIMA, and Ekvista, prepared amendments to the Proposal.
Twenty-four amendments were created to strengthen the new law and to ensure that the law addresses the victim’s urgent need for safety and security. Of the 24 proposed amendments, 8 were adopted. The law is expected to be implemented by the end of 2010.
