New Report Reveals Patterns of Domestic Violence Against Older Women

A European study supported by the Daphne III Program of the European Commission has released a report entitled Intimate Partner Violence Against Older Women. The purpose of the project is to address intimate partner violence (IPV) against women over sixty, exploring the intersection of age and gender that is often underrepresented in family violence research. Countries participating in the study include: Austria, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Poland, and Portugal.

According to the study’s survey of institutions in participating countries, although it was found that most facilities dealt with fewer cases involving older women, experts agreed that older female victims of IPV face particular difficulties in the termination of a long-term abusive relationship. The study also found that most older women experiencing IPV reported a long history of such violence. The study examined trends in help-seeking by older female victims of IPV and the types of services they receive.
