Nicaragua: 29 Femicides So Far This Year Amid Government Inaction and Impunity
Friday, July 25, 2025 7:30 AM

At least 29 women have been murdered in Nicaragua between January and July 2025, according to feminist organizations working discreetly amid state repression. The latest case involved Ana María Ortega García, 25, found beaten and strangled in Nueva Guinea, with her ex-partner identified as the main suspect. Victims range from teenagers to elderly women, with most cases reported in Managua, Chinandega, and rural areas lacking police presence.

Activists warn of widespread impunity, underscoring that even when women report abuse, authorities often fail to act. Despite the partial reopening of Women’s Police Stations, staff are undertrained, and some perpetrators have been released through presidential pardons. The case of Celsa Jasneri García, a student killed after reporting her abduction, notes the lack of effective protection and the urgent need for systemic reform.
