Nicaragua: Femicide Number 36 Underscores Government’s Inaction

A new femicide took place inside Nicaragua’s Army General Staff in Managua, where Major Enmanuel Flores fatally stabbed his fiancée, Lieutenant Teresa Vega Treminio, during a dispute.

The killing comes only weeks after Flores had publicly proposed to Vega, and raises the number of femicides in Nicaragua to 36 in 2025. After the attack, Flores injured himself with the same weapon and was detained by fellow officers, though his condition remains unclear. Despite the gravity of the crime occurring within military headquarters, neither the Army nor the Police have issued an official statement.

Women’s rights groups condemned the murder as evidence of the structural nature of gender-based violence in Nicaragua. They criticized the state’s lack of effective prevention and protection policies, blaming Ortega’s regime.
